Choosing a Coach is All About Fit!

Tuesday 10/27/2009

Coaching is a hot concept these days, no matter where you look! Life coaches, business coaches, career coaches, leadership, executive, performance improvement, health and wellness coaches, life transition coaches. Why are there so many different types of coaches? If you are looking for a coach, how do you make a decision on who to hire? And how do you know what to expect once you take a chance and hire one?

When it comes right down to it, selecting a coach is all about fit. It is about finding the best person to work with you on what you want to achieve through the coaching process. At the most basic level, it is discovering who you “click” with – who you feel that spark with, who you think will travel well with you on the journey you want to take.

Selecting a coach is also about finding that person who will challenge you, assessing who will help you set the big goals you want to achieve and keep your journey creative and engaging. Sometimes content expertise impacts your selection of a coach and sometimes it does not. A coach is not an “advisor” but rather a facilitator, supporter, travel guide, challenger, and if they are a really good coach, someone who will occasionally irritate you in a way you will grow to be thankful for!

So how do you find your coach?

  • Ask around.  In the business and fitness communities many people use coaches and may have a recommendation for you.
  • Read publications and blogs of potential coaches.  You may find a perspective that appeals to you.
  • Take advantage of the “free consultation” advertised on a potential coaches website.  It provides the opportunity to converse with the coach and test your fit.

Take your time.  Finding the right coach will impact your results, so investigate and explore before you buy.
